Tools I Use
These are the instruments and software I actually carry and use on commercial jobs every week. Not a sponsored list — just what works. I love tools and technology, and I'm always looking for gear that makes the job faster or more accurate.
Links go to TruTech Tools where available — they're the go-to for professional HVAC instruments.
Electrical
Fieldpiece is my primary electrical meter brand. The SC680 handles inverter testing, phase rotation, and everything else I need on commercial equipment. The Supco M500 is a dedicated megohm meter I keep in the bag for compressor and motor testing.
Fieldpiece SC680 Wireless Power Clamp Meter
True RMS wireless clamp meter with inrush current, microamps for flame sensors, capacitance, and power measurements. Built-in phase rotation and sequencing with just two leads — no third lead needed. Inverter-compatible for testing VFD-driven equipment.
This is my go-to meter. I bought it specifically for the inverter testing capabilities — I'm working on VFD-driven equipment constantly and I need a meter that can handle that. The phase rotation check with just two leads is huge when you're wiring up three-phase equipment and don't want to carry extra test leads. Microamps for flame sensors, capacitance for motors — it does everything I need in one meter.
Supco M500 Insulation Tester / Megohmmeter
Dedicated insulation resistance tester for compressor and motor winding checks. Tests at 250V and 500V with a clear analog-style display. Compact, reliable, and purpose-built for HVAC diagnostics.
When a compressor or motor is acting up, megohming the windings tells you immediately if you've got a ground fault or insulation breakdown. The Supco M500 is simple, reliable, and does one thing well. I keep it in the bag at all times — it's saved me from condemning good compressors more than once.
Manifolds & Smart Probes
I really like the Testo gauges and smart probes. The accuracy is outstanding, the Bluetooth connectivity is reliable, and the app is clean. When I need precision on refrigeration work, Testo is what I reach for.
Testo 557s Smart Digital Manifold
4-way valve block digital manifold with Bluetooth Smart Probes integration. Pairs with the Testo Smart App for real-time superheat, subcooling, and vacuum monitoring.
The accuracy on these Testo gauges is hard to beat. The 557s with the wireless probes gives me data I can trust when I'm dialing in a system. The app is clean and the Bluetooth range is solid. When precision matters, this is what I grab.
Testo Smart Probes (115i, 549i, 552i)
Bluetooth-connected temperature clamps, pressure probes, and vacuum probes that pair with the Testo Smart App. Compact, accurate, and stackable — throw a few in your pocket and you've got a full diagnostic setup.
These little probes are incredibly accurate for their size. I can throw a few in my pocket and have a full diagnostic setup anywhere. The 552i vacuum probe is especially good — I trust it more than most standalone micron gauges.
Evacuation, Scales & Micron Gauges
AccuTools makes the best evacuation equipment I've used. The BluVac micron gauge is the accuracy standard, the TruBlu hoses cut evacuation time, and their scale is built for commercial work.
AccuTools BluVac+ Pro Digital Micron Gauge
Professional wireless digital micron gauge with Bluetooth connectivity. Patented sensor technology for the most accurate vacuum readings available. Connects to MeasureQuick for real-time logging.
This is the micron gauge I trust. The accuracy is unmatched — when I'm pulling vacuum on a VRF system or chiller, I need to know my readings are real. The Bluetooth connection to MeasureQuick means I can monitor vacuum from across the mechanical room and have a logged record of the entire evacuation.
AccuTools DS-220R Refrigerant Scale
220 lb capacity digital refrigerant scale with high accuracy and resolution. Purpose-built for HVAC charging and recovery with a durable platform and easy-to-read display.
Solid, accurate, and reliable. I've used a lot of scales over the years and the AccuTools holds up. The 220 lb capacity handles commercial recovery tanks without maxing out, and the resolution is tight enough for precision charging.
TruBlu Evacuation Kit with BluVac+ Micro
Complete evacuation system with BluVac+ Micro wireless micron gauge, TruBlu hoses, and core removal tools. Designed to minimize restriction and speed up evacuation times.
The TruBlu hoses make a real difference — larger ID means faster evacuation and fewer restrictions. Having the whole kit matched together eliminates the weak links in the vacuum path. I switched to this setup and my evacuation times dropped noticeably.
Vacuum Pumps
NAVAC changed the vacuum pump game with the inverter-driven design and built-in micron gauge. Lighter, quieter, and smarter than traditional pumps.
NAVAC NRP8Di Smart Vacuum Pump
8 CFM inverter-driven dual-stage vacuum pump with built-in micron gauge and Bluetooth connectivity. Lightweight at 28 lbs with automatic shutoff.
The built-in micron gauge is what sold me. No separate gauge to set up, no extra connections to leak-check. It pulls deep vacuum fast, the inverter drive is quieter than traditional pumps, and at 28 lbs it's noticeably lighter to haul up to a rooftop.
Recovery Machine
For recovery, it's Appion. The G5Twin is the standard for a reason — commercial-grade performance in a package you can actually carry up a ladder.
Appion G5Twin Recovery Machine
Twin-cylinder recovery machine at only 24 lbs. Handles commercial and industrial recovery demands with high-efficiency motor and massive airflow cooling.
When I need to recover refrigerant, this is what comes out. At 24 lbs it's the lightest machine in its class but it recovers like something twice its size. The twin-cylinder design keeps it from bogging down on large commercial systems. I've used it on everything from VRF to centrifugal chillers.
Thermal Imaging
A thermal imager is one of those tools that once you have it, you wonder how you ever worked without it. Hot bearings, bad connections, insulation gaps — it shows you things you can't see any other way.
Testo 872s Thermal Imaging Camera
320x240 resolution thermal imager with SuperResolution (640x480), integrated digital camera, and Testo Smart App connectivity. Identifies hot spots, insulation gaps, and electrical faults with professional-grade image quality.
A thermal imager has paid for itself many times over in this line of work. I use it for finding hot bearings on pumps, checking electrical connections, verifying insulation integrity, and showing customers exactly where their building is losing energy. The Testo 872s ties into the same Smart App ecosystem as my gauges, which keeps everything in one place.
The Apps That Tie It All Together
Good instruments are only half the equation. The software that connects them, logs the data, and generates reports is what turns a service call into a documented, repeatable process.
MeasureQuick
Mobile HVAC diagnostic platform that connects to Bluetooth instruments and guides technicians through system evaluations with real-time calculations and reporting.
MeasureQuick ties all my wireless instruments together into one diagnostic view. Superheat, subcooling, airflow, electrical — it calculates everything in real time and generates professional reports I can hand to a customer or building engineer. It's changed how we document our work.
Fieldpiece Job Link App
Wireless measurement platform that connects all Fieldpiece Job Link probes, manifolds, and meters into a single dashboard with data logging.
When I'm running Fieldpiece probes on a chiller commissioning, the Job Link app is where everything comes together. I can monitor multiple probes simultaneously from my phone and log the entire startup. The data export is clean enough to hand to an engineer.
Testo Smart App
Connects to all Testo Smart Probes and digital manifolds via Bluetooth. Real-time measurements, data logging, and PDF report generation.
Clean interface, reliable Bluetooth, and the PDF reports look professional. When I'm using Testo instruments, the Smart App is how I log and share the data. It's straightforward and does exactly what it needs to do.
